Says Jeffrey:
We were called “Cock and Feathers”; we did our Juggling (with singing) specialty act as well as several other routines (some our own material, some as given to us by the show’s director). This was at the Mayfair Music Hall in Santa Monica, California USA. The show was called “A Night in the Old London Music Hall”. (The same title was given to many shows, running for years, in the same theatre.) Milt Larsen was the producer (the same guy who runs The Magic Castle in Hollywood). Also on the bill were Bernard Fox (later replaced by another Chairman), Antonia Ellis, Marcia Lewis, Craig Fields… and a few others (Billy &/or Sandey may remember more names).
A highlight: Sandey and I played piano duets (and solos) in the little front lobby of the theatre.
One day, I was playing Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag and the immortal Eubie Blake walked into the back of the room. When I finished, Eubie said (for all to hear): “Now THAT’S the way to play ragtime!”. Quite an honor – the guy was one of the great original ragtime (and early jazz/pop/broadway) composers. He wrote “The Charleston Rag” and the song “I’m Just Wild about Harry” (and many other hits).
